How Back-To-School Time Can Affect Your Pets

With August coming to an end, it means that back-to-school time is here once more. Parents and kids are having to adjust to new routines and activities, and everyone is trying to keep up with this time of the year and all that it demands. However, it’s important not to forget how back-to-school time can affect your pets. At Loveland Veterinary Clinic, we’re here to provide expert, compassionate care for your animals whenever they need it.

In this post, we’ll look at how back-to-school time and the stresses it brings can impact your pet, as well as what you can do to help them deal with all the changes. If your pet needs care, then please contact us right away!

NEW SCHEDULES

This time of year brings new schedules for everyone, including parents who have to drop the kids off in the morning before work, and kids who stay after school for extracurricular activities. When it comes to your pets, these changes in schedules can affect when they’re fed, when they’re walked, and when you can fit in a vet appointment for them.

An easy way to make sure your pet is taken care of during this time of year is to add their name to your daily schedule. If you want to walk your dog before work, then add those 10 to 15 minutes to your morning itinerary. If it’s the kids’ responsibility to feed the dog or cat every evening, then add it to their daily task board or chore chart. By doing this, you can make sure that your pet gets the exercise they need, and that they aren’t going hungry while your kids are doing something else after school.

LESS TIME AT HOME

With busier schedules during the fall, it also means that you’ll likely be spending less time at home during the week. While you’re walking and feeding your pet at the same times each day, you’re still gone for long stretches when you’re at work or attending an after-school activity or sporting event for the kids. Your pet might be fine being left at home, but if they spent more time with you each day during the summer, or they got used to having the kids around over the summer break, then there will likely be a period of adjustment as they get used to being on their own again.

It could be beneficial to hire a dog walker to come to your home during the day, or to have a neighbor check on your cat. If you have a fenced yard, then you could consider adding a doggie door so that your four-legged friend can go in and out whenever they want. Pet cams are also becoming more popular, and you could install one in your home and check on your cat throughout the day via your smartphone.
